Silver Fire Books – Independent Online Book Store
I’ve been wanting to start posting about some of my favorite bookish merchandise and shops, so I thought I’d start with one of the shops that I’m a current rep for.
I’ve been buying books from Silver Fire Books for about a year now. I couldn’t even begin to tell you how many books on my TBR have been acquired via SFB. There is always such an eclectic selection of both new and vintage books, you never know what’s going to pop up next.
The Way it Works: SFB has both a website and live sales on Instagram, both open to U.S. residents only. The live sales are on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday (subject to change) and the books posted there are available on a first comment, first serve basis. You have to be quick! There are some regulars that are claiming books (by being the first to comment SOLD) mere seconds after a book is posted. I recommend turning on post notifications so you don’t miss a sale. You can also ask to be added to a list that will be notified via comment whenever a sale starts. You can comment BACKUP in case someone changes their mind, or the shop gets another copy in stock.
Once you’ve claimed your books you’ll receive a PayPal invoice (you’ll need to provide your email address if it’s your first time). What I love most, is that you can keep your invoice open for a week and continue to add more books at the next few sales. This comes in handy since you get free shipping if you spend over $25. Shipping is still affordable even with smaller orders as they’ll be sent via media mail. I’m one of those people that would rather just pay for more goods than pay for shipping… so I spend the $25 minimum every time.
If you prefer to browse at your own pace, you can find a large selection on the website and add them to your cart at your leisure instead of trying to be the fastest at typing sold. This is where my rep code comes in handy. I’m one of several reps for August and September so my code can be used through the end of the month. RBTW10 will save you 10% off your entire order on the website only.
I’m always impressed by the wide selection available. There are countless books I’ve never even heard of, but sometimes I see one I just have to have. A Field Guide to Monsters was one of those impulse buys that I was super excited about. I’m still amazed I was quick enough to be the first to comment. SFB is also responsible for at least four of the Alice in Wonderland editions that I have in my collection. Some being vintage editions that I would probably never find elsewhere.
Books are always sent wrapped up in plain brown paper. Depending on how many books you’re ordering at once, you may have more than one wrapped stack. At least one of them will also be wrapped in twine as well with an adorable Thank You sticker on the top. You can see this in the first photo, which is my last haul from SFB. This added touch always makes book mail from SFB that much more enjoyable to open.
When I first joined bookstagram I went on a Thrift Books binge, buying tons of their used books. It didn’t take long to get tired of the used library editions and often copies with water damage. I don’t mind used library books, but I hate when the plastic protector is left on. Obviously I want to photograph my books, and the shiny reflective plastic is no good for photos. The quality available from SFB blows Thrift Books right out of the water. Plus you can get a good idea of the condition of the book from the picture. I’ve received several books that have “property of…” stickers/written on the inside, but it doesn’t bother me. As long as the cover/spine isn’t ruined from writing or stickers, then I’m happy. There have probably only been two books (out of the MANY I’ve bought) that were listed in very good condition that I would have personally considered good condition.
Overall, I would absolutely recommend Silver Fire Books. Don’t forget to use RBTW10 to save 10% when purchasing from the website silverfirebooks.com.
